PUTARURU.

The candidature of the Putaruru queen, Miss A. Ibbotson, was assisted to the extent of £l2 7s by a concert organised by Mr J. Rolfe, and held on Wednesday last. The performance warranted a larger attendance, in fact it was worthy.of any town. Two farces were staged, in which Mr and Mrs Rolfe (who are first class professionals) took the leadtngparts. Mr Rolfe hadpaid special attention to the tuition of other members of the castes, and so the audience was treated to something quite out of the ordinary in amusements. "Hurrah for Casey!" with Mr Rolfe as " Casey " was brimful of amusing scenes, but perhaps the better of the two was " Irish Justice." Mr Rolfe as judge, kept his audience laughing with aching sides from the commencement, and when the curtain was brought down tremendous applause greeted the members of the company. The caste for " Hurrah for Casy! " was as follows:—Casey, Mr J. Rolfe ; consumptive Willie, Mr W. W. Bridge ; Little Willie, Mr R. Thorpe; Tim Tough, Mr J. Roach; Mrs Hash, Mrs Rolfe, and Miss Gush, Miss L. Ibbotson, The same members with the addition of Miss A. Ibbotson and Mr A. G. Yardley played " Irish Justice." Included on the programme were songs and dances by Miss A. Ibbotson ; songs by Mr C. Harris (2); recitations by Mrs Rolfe and songs by Mr Yardley (4). After the concert a dance was held Messrs J. Barnes and A. Harwood officiating as M's.C. Both these gentlemen also worked well in connection with the theatrical arrangements. The music and accompaniments were nicely played by Mrs Barnes. A most enjoyable evening was brought to a close at about 1 a.m. On Saturday a " sales " afternoon was held in support of the Waotu queen and a good sum of money was realised thereby. A " Mock Court" was also held, at which Mr J. Rolfe presided. The accused brought in by Mr J. Roach contributed in all about £3l, half of which will be devoted to the Waotu and Putaruru queens. The judge himself, did not escape a fine. A meeting of those interested in the erection of sale yards was held on Saturday evening, and it was decided to purchase five acres of land near the post office as a site. The project is being taken up enthusiastically, and it seems certain now that sales will be held at an early date in the township.
