Mr 11. Ellis, late of Taihoa, was on a visit to Matamata this week.
Mr J. W. Finnerty, who has been indisposed for the past ten days, has so far recovered as to be able to leave the house.
Mrs Hendy, of Okauia, who has not been enjoying the best of health of late, left Matamata for Auckland on Tuesday.
Mr E. C. Banks, of Matamata, was elected chairman of the Auckland Education board last week. Mr Banks has the congratulations of the district.
Mr Cyril Fleming has received instructions to proceed to the \“Glaxo” camp. Mr Fleming previously enlisted but was rejected as being unfit.
A special meeting of the Town board to discuss matters relating to the proposed sanitary service was to have been held on Monday, but was adjourned till last night.
The appeal of Mr W. Cleary, of Te Poi, was again before the Military Service board at Hamilton last week. The appellant was ordered into camp with the next draft, but was given a week’s leave.
The Matamata queen executive is holding a carnival and fancy dress football match in the Domain on Saturday. The programme comprises races for adults and young people, and many novelties. A large attendance is expected. /
The Khaki Queen’s novelty and fancy dress mask carnival will be held to-morrow, Friday night. The affair promises to be one of the most brilliant yet held in Matamata. The whole arrangements are elaborate and will be well to the taste of patrons. Among the special features will be a twilight dance, and a “hands and feet’’ dance. The partners for the latter will be selected by their feet in front of a screen.
The Peria Soldiers’ Queen com' mittee announce that the drawing of the winning, numbers of the Art Union will take place in the Matamata Town hall on Monday, September 2nd, at 9.30 p.m. Mr C. D. Dawson, late of Matamata, has purchased a dairy farm at Whangarei, and is now in possession. The property is said to be most up-to-date, and is fitted throughout with an electrical plant. There has been keen competition for the past two weeks for a “ teddy bear,” donated to the “ Blue queen ” by Mr J. Draper. The “teddy” was finally “ knocked down ”on Friday. Altogether it realised £9 17s. The baby show held in the Town hall on Wednesday proved most' successful, the proceeds amounting to £SO. The results were as follows : —Up to 6 months, Tom Yardley, 95 votes; 6 to 12 months, Stanley Livingstone, 482 votes; 1 to 2 years, Harry Ryan, 152 votes; 2 to 4 years, Eva Kelso, 201 votes. Tyres at D. McL. “Wallace, Ltd.’ see advertisement. Captain William Hobbs is starting the practice of his profession as a dentist in Hamilton. He had, previous to volunteering, been in practice in Willis street, Wellington, for 16 years, and went in command of E Company, 15th reinforcements. When in France he had front line experience with thb Rifle Brigade, and also was attached for duty at the N.Z. Divisional Dental hospital, which is generally situated in close touch with the front line troops. While acting as dental officer, he made a special study of “ trench mouth ” and other dental diseases which are intensified by active service conditions, and was very successful in treating same. During four months’duty at the Hospital, Mr Hobbs attended to over 1500 of our officers and men in all branches of the service. The Assistant Director of Medical Service recommended his transfer to the Dental Corps, but this was not given effect to, as several dentists from Hew Zealand were being sent forward. Since his return Mr Hobbs made a visit to the Chatham Islands, where the inhabitants had had no dental service for two years. — Waikato Times.
