Mr T. V. Wheatley has taken over the Matamata Plumbing Works from Mr J. Koce. He has an advertisement in this issue. Mrs E. M. Gray, who was suddenly taken ill at the end of last week, was removed to the Hamilton hospital on Monday. Many friends wish her a speedy recovery. The positions of the riding queens on Monday were as follows : Matamata 23,465 votes, Taihoa 14,544, Peria 11,106, Turanga-o-moana 7,342, Waharoa 548. Several diphteritic cases have been reported in Matamata during the past few days, one unfortunately proving fatal. The epidemic seems to have restarted with the rains. Most of the cases are young children, but one affected is about eight years old. Cr. Rollett, at the County council meeting last week, said that a cheese factory would shortly be erected at Tokoroa. The settlers there were also fortunate in being able to do without coal, having plenty of water power. There is a possibility of the Town board putting a loan proposal, for £IOOO for sanitary site and materials, before the ratepayers next month. A site is absolutely necessary before a system can be inaugurated, and will later be used in connection with a drainage scheme. A., baby show, and children’s carnival will be held by the Red queen’s supporters in the Matamata Hall, on Wednesday next at 2 p.m. Afternoon tea will be supplied free. Classes for babies are open to all up to 4 years of age. Musical and children’s items will be rendered throughout the afternoon. Nurse T. Im.pey, recently of Auckland, has taken over the management of the “ Kapai Whare ” private maternity hospital. Prior to going to Auckland Nurse Impey, who is a membei; of the Australian Trained Nurses’ Association, was a nurse in the North Auckland district under the Bay of Islands Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and also held the position of assistant native nurse under the Health department. Dr J. Carolan will be the medical attendant. Local bodies often have to put up with a great deal in the way of ratepayers’ requests, but the following letter had the Matamata County council well beaten on Friday : “ Dear sir I obcect to pay rates on the tearms of my lesse I have rought to the valuer general to that efect I get nothing from the government at the end of my improvements and I am not going to pay for them they can take the land and give me 12 month notice acordement to the tearms of my lease I did not obcet to pay unpoved rate on the posprty.” The writer of the letter had no friends among the councillors, none of whom seemed too anxious to identify the property. Gold brooch lost. Peria monthly carnival Friday next week, at Matamata. Property on Dawson’s estate for sale. Mrs E. M. Gray’s furniture sale at noon to-morrow (Friday.) Garden party and tea at the Opal Springs on Saturday, in support of Blue queen. The “ Flappers’ ” ball will be a great success next Tuesday.
