HUNGAHUNGA DRAINAGE BOARD.
Engineer’s Report. At the last meeting of the Hungahunga Drainage hoard the following 4 report from the engineer was adopted : Nobilo has completed a further 45 chains of the upper Waihekau drain and is about to turn or. the last length from tho angle to Miles’ road. The fall in this locality is much more sluggish than that which obtains lower down the drain. Contracts for constructing portion of Thompsons’ outlet ] and cleaning Kirkness Bros, outlet . have been dealt with during the interim. Re Thompsons’ outlet—l found on taking the levels that tho present culvert under tho Tanranga-o-moana-Waharoa road is not of sufficient depth to allow any greater depth being obtained at the finishing point, moreover, it is not on tho right line of fall to give proper drainage to the upper country. Therefore, 1 have let the first section and propose doing the balance under instructions from the board, after receiving the authority of the Matamata County council to alter the position of the culvert referred to. When shifting the culvert perhaps the county may entertain a proposal to substitute for tho present wooden structure a set of 2ft concrete pipes on the basis of half cost each. I estimate the total cost of the whole works at £l5O. 13lye’ outlet has been commenced *by contractor Nobilo and good work is being done. Referring to this work tho settlers interested having signified their willingness to contribute the amount necessary to extend along their boundary line to Weeks’ corner I forthwith laid off another 20 to 30 chains at a cost of £3O 7s. I have supplied the interested parties with the necessary data requesting them to submit to the clerk the sum mentioned when tho work can be in eluded with tho original contract. Your approval is beret y requested. Brumbys’ outlet —-Tho chairman and myself have'now the following recommendations to make in respect of this work: The position is that Messrs Brumby and Sheehan are requiring proper drainage for tho eastern portion of their properties and this can only be carried out effectually by following the natural depression through Maelaren’s property to the main outlet drain. Madaren objects to a drain being cut where required. Under such circumstances it is necessary to proceed under the Section of the Land Drainage Act, of 1908 and certain clauses of tho Public Works Act, 1908. In pursuanco of such plans are before you to-day for your approval as the first step .in the proper line of procedure. Ro-appointment of classifier —Referring to my appointment of classifier I beg to point out that I am unable to proceed until the ratepayers’ lists relating to the new areas have been authenticated. Therefore it would be as well to allow my previous appointment to lapso by effluxion of time and re appoint me when matters , are in legal form.
