MATAMATA RED CROSS
The ladies gathered in good numbers for the August meeting of the Red Cross society, last week. During the afternoon the secretary read a letter fpom the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade, Auckland, in which Mrs Smith (lady corps superintendent) conveyed to the Matamata Red Cross her thanks and high appreciation of their work. A copy of a letter from Lady Jekyll (head of St. John’s Ambulance warehouse, London) was also read. An extract will no doubt be of interest to all Red Cross workers. She said : “ I now write to acknowledge with, very grateful thanks your further consignment, which has come safely to hand. All the clothing is quite excellent, and we are very thankful indeed to have it, now that the quality of the material here is no longer as good as it was. And your woollen things are first rate. Our hospitals have now increased to 250 which are specially supplied from here, and we also send out a large consignment of clothing every week to ihe front stores in France. 1 don’t know what we should do, were it not for the very liberal support we receive from New Zealand, and I hope you will tell everyone with whom you are in touch how very gratefully it is appreciated here.” Mesdames Simpson and Cranswick dispensed afternoon tea. The box packed contained the following: 25 pyjama suits, 17 shirts, 7 bed jackets, 12 pillow slips, 12 towels, 12 handkerchiefs, 8 bandages, 2 pairs socks, 2 balaclavas, 1 cardigan jacket, 6 Red Cross bags, 12 eye bandages, 2 roller bandages, 1 bundle"* old linen, 1 dozen magazines, 1 bundle novels.
