We are pleased to be able to state that Mr G. J. Duxfield, who recently had to undergo an operation for eye trouble, has improved sufficiently fo v be able to return to his home. A hard-up and basket social will be held in support of the Peria soldiers’ queen on Tuesday, July 30th, in the Matamata Town hali. Gentlemen will not be charged for admission. Ladies are expected to take -baskets. Good music will be provided. Some fine specimens of work the wounded and sick soldiers are being taught are on vievv in Mr E. Jones’ shop window at present. Three excellent examples of wood-carving, the work of a Matamata boy, Pvte. H. Avard, may be seen.
The Matamata “bachelor” girls will hold a fancy dress masquerade dance in aid of the Matamata Queen’s condidature, on Friday, August 2nd. Fourprizes will be given—two for the best fancy dresses and two for the most original.
J3y the kind permission of Messrs Stewart & Co. the Matamata ladies ai*e serving luncheon and afternoon tea in the firm’s rpoms on Wednesday next. The Red Cross shop will be held in Tower road, not in the hall as previously advertised.
Whilst attending to the engine of his motor car on Monday morning Mr J. McSweeney, stock agent for the Farmers’ Auctioneering company, severely damaged the index finger,of the right hand. When the sufferer left it was thought that it would be'necessary to amputate the member.
It’s a good donation from Mr Smales, and it’s good for the cause, said Mr H. Rollett, on Wednesday, when Mi’ J. Price (chairman of the Matamata riding queen executive) announced that Mr Smales had consented to become hon. secretary for the executive. Mr Smales is also secretary for the Matamata queen.
Despite the cold weather the Methodist Mission, conducted throughout last week, was well attended at each service. One of the features was the most excellent singing of Miss Alice Rimmer, who made many friends. The Mission can be termed as an entire success.
The Peria Soldiers’ Queen committee have an advance notice of a grand plain and fancy dress, masquerade and novelty carnival to be held in the Matamata hall on August 23rd. Those who enjoy a good evening’s fun and frolic will get it from the novelties of that evening. Watch for next advertisement.
The abnormal weather conditions have been noticed at Matamata, in common with other districts, during the past week. For several days on end the hills at Okauia have been fringed with snow, while at Turanga-o-moana, on Monday snow was noticed falling on the hills at noon. At Lichfield snow was falling on the same day. In the Matamata township the frosts have been heavier than any previously remembered
The sealed papers, with duplicate numbers contained in envelopes to be sold in connection with the Matamata surprise packet campaign, were drawn by Mr W. D. Horne (8.N.Z.) yesterday morning in the presence of the chairman of the Town board, Mr Price, the secretary of the carnival executive, Mr Smales, and the editor of the “Record.” The scheme has been so worked out that there is not the slightest possibility of. anyone being aware as to what envelopes contain the larger prizes. Each envelope contains a ticket which entitles the purchaser to a useful article. Particulars of prizes are advertised. The duplicate numbers are lodged in the bank safe.
