Even the most sombre regions seem lit htfo a diffused light, which truly has its" origin in the terrestrial atmosphere.'' It is the light of the earth. Differ, ent people have endeavoured to evalu* ate the intensity of this earth lightV and have found that it is of the order' of one-tenth part of the intensity of a! star of the first order of magnitude*' It is attributed, at least partially, to ■a permanent aurora borealis, is revealed by the characteristic green ray which is observed on ohSfius* n%hts in the whole hMYSas.: -J
