Mr Fred Jones, of Peria, left Matamata this week on an extended holiday in the South Island. During his absence his farm is being managed by Mr J. Robb. Mr R. Blennerhassett, who recently returned from the front, left Matamata on Tuesday en route tyj Wanganui where be is taking up a position under the Wanganui Education board. The “ Copper Trail ” campaign will be opened on Monday next, when a card party and dance will be held in the Matamata hall in aid cf the Peria Soldiers’ Queen. It is hoped that a good sum will be realised at this opening function. Arrangements have been come to whereby the stock sales of the FI.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Ltd., will be inserted each week in the “ Record.” The three Waikato auctioneering companies are now advertising • regularly in this paper, so that the service is now complete in this respect. After a residence of some months in Matamata Mr and and Mrs R. Leonard left for Auckland on Wednesday. During thenstay here both Mr Leonard and bis wife made many friends who will regret their departure. Before leaving Mr Leonard was entertained by a number of business men and was the recipient of a Gladstone bag, as a token of esteem. With several gentlemen friends, Mr W. H. R. iYee, who left Matamata yesterday, was entertained at a musical evening and supper at “ The Tower,” by Mr and Mrs E. Beeson on Tuesday. The function was an extremely pleasant one and the toasts of 41 the guest ” and “ host and hostess and daughter” were enthusiastically honored. With a few well chosen words Mr Beeson spoke eulogistically of Mr Free as a man and official. He presented him with a tobacco pouch and supply of tobacco as tokens of esteem. Matamata is recognised as being well ahead of many farming districts in the matter of pedigree stock, so that it is well that there are constantly young farmers coming to the front to maintain the reputation. On Tuesday Mr J. H. Wilson, who is building up a pedigree Holstien herd, unloaded ihe bull Romeo Van Segis, and also a cow,, bred by Mr W. I. Lovelock. The bull was recently inquired after by the N.S.W. Government, and a few hours after its purchase by Mr Wilson a cable was received stating that the Australian state was a purchaser. The cost of the animal to Mr Wilson ran well into three figures.
