MATAMATA COUNTY CARNIVAL.
District Queens Selected. In response to the wish of the Matamata riding executive meetings have been held in several districts during the last few days to select ladies as district representatives in the queen carnival. Matamata itself led the way on Thursday, when about forty residents unanimously selected Mrs H. Kelso as their candidate. The nomination (£5) was made by Mr R. Hope and seconded by Mr B. C. Taylor (£2 10s). The selection of a color was left to the candidate whose selection was red. Mr J. Price presided. Mr Price also addressed meetings at Waharoa and Peria, and with the district members of the executive explained the general scheme. Waharoa will pin its faith to Mrs A. J. Tong. Peria and Hinuera have chosen Mrs W. Blennerhassett to be the Peria soldiers’ queen. Turanga-o-moana will be represented by Mrs H. Harding. The residents of Taihoa showed their appreciation of the heroism of Mrs Gould in connection with the Wimmera disaster by selecting that lady as their candidate. Those at the meeting made a resolve to endeavor to make “'the queen of the sea ” the queen of Matamata county also.
