TAIHOA.
A farewell social was tendered Mr and Mrs H. Ellis in the Taihoa hall on Monday evening, and proved to be a most enjoyable function. A good floor had been prepared for dancing, and excellent music was played by Mr and Mrs W. T. Darby, with extras by Miss M. Robinson and Miss Cotter. During the evening Mr M. Madill was called upon to fulfil a pleasant duty by making presentations to both guests. To Mrs Ellis he handed a handsome silver-backed mirror, and to Mr Ellis a silver wristlet watch, both inscribed. In a neat speech Mr Madill stated that the residents were sorry that the district was losing one of its public men and two good neighbors. M r Ellis had filled many positions of usefulness at Taihoa since the opening up of the settlement, and it was but fitting that the settlers should recognise the fact. In going to camp without appealing Mr Ellis was making a sacrifice as many others had. He wished him good luck and a safe return. A few remarks were added on behalf of many Matamata friends. Mr Madill concluded with kindly remarks of the settlers' appreciation of Mrs Ellis. A dainty supper was served by the ladies, and a very sociable evening brought to a close with the sing* ing of "Auld Lang Syne." Several songs were rendered during the evening. Mr W. S. Wilson made a capable M.C. Mr Ellis was for two years a director of the Te Aroha Dairy company, and had filled positions on the school and hall committees.
