FARMERS' UNION.
Matamata Branch Meeting. The monthly meeting of the Matamata branoh of tho Fanners' union was In hi on Wednesday, Mr IT. Rollett presiding Messrs A. and E. Bowler, J. W. Simpson, 11. Mogford and the secretary, Mr B. Bleuner- • hassett, wore also present. NEW MEMBERS. Messrs P. Ling*, 11. W. Smales, A. L. Robinson and C. J. Dickering were elected members of tho branch. BED CROSS CAMPAIGN. Mr 0. L Biukfoiil, organiser, wrote soliciting the branch's support for the great Red Cro.-s campaign. It was explained that the chairman of the Town board was attending a conference to define boundaries, and had also called a public meeting of representative citizens and settlers to organiso a campaign. General ways, means and schemes were discussed, and it was decided that the branch executive attend the public meeting. SUB-PROVINCIAL AREA. The chairman stated tltat the question of joining the Thames Valley Sub provincial scheme had, some months ago, been doferred until June. Owing to the small attendance he suggested that it be again deferred. This course was agreod to. One member stated that he was quite prepared to discuss the question —it would get short shift THE SALE YARDS. Mr A. A. Bowler drew attention to the bad state of tiie Matamata saloyards. The yards were in such a state that nothing short of concrete would suffice. It was cruelty to calves to put them in the pons, and stock generally was shown to disadvantage to outside buj ers. The excuse that the yards were used by three companies was not sound. Matamata should bo treated as other districts. His suggestion that petitions be circulated among the farmers and forwarded to the three companies was carried. THE CONFERENCE. In speaking on the subject of the recent conference the chairman suggested that the delegate's report should be held over for discussion by a larger number of members. He would, however, like to say that it still appeared to him that there was room for great improvement in the arrangements for the conference. He thought that some months before the next conference the branch should forward a recommendation on the matter. Mr Simpson : Hear, hear. Following on a motion carried by the branch last year it was decided to pay the delegate's travelling expenses.
