A bazaar and sale of work is being held at the Ngarua public hall, on Wednesday afternoon in aid of the Red Cross fund. The Rev. T. G. Broke, Home Mission Secretary for New Zealand, will preach in the Matamata Methodist church on Sunday evening. The question of the erection of a dried milk factory in the vicinity of Matamata will be discussed in the Town hall on Friday, 28th inst. War time retrenchment. A list of the business premises which will close on Friday at 8 p.m. instead of 9 p.m. is advertised to-day. The new order of things will come into force on the 28th inst. Mr A. R. Vosper, of Springs road, has disposed of his property to Mr T. Troughton, and has purchased a farm of 500 acres on the Waotu road, Putaruru, within a mile of the township.
Many residents of the district will regret to learn that Matamata's most popular and courteous postmaster, Mr W. R. W. Free, has received notice of his transference to the Hamilton office. For three year and over Mr Free has served the public of Matamata faithfully and well and his ■wife has carried out many social duties. Both will be much missed.
In connection with a proposed beautifying scheme, the Matamata Town board has written to the Government experts asking for advice as to the most suitable trees, or shrubs, to plant on the streets. It was considered by members that shrubs will be more preferable than trees owing to the damage the roots of the latter do to the roads.
The public is reminded of the concert and address to be held in the Public hall to-night. The function is being held to make people conversant with the Red Cross scheme now in hand, and to organise thoroughly in connection with the " copper trail" in which it is hoped Auckland will beat Wellington. The charge for admission—one shilling —is fixed low so as just to cover expenses Dates of Te Poi school dances given. Ladies costumes at Miss Storey's. The best is yours by purchasing from Rose Bros. Ltd., Tirau. Tenders, for carting cream from Omahine to the Matamata railway station, are invited by the Waikato Go-op. Dairy Go. Ltd. Forms of tender may be obtained from the company, or of Mr G. C. Neal, Te Poi.
