Mr and Mrs F. O’Flanagan, of Devonport, are visiting' friends in Matamata. Mrs E. Winstone Smith, with her little daughter, Joyce, is on a visit to her parents, Mr and Mrs G. Buckley, of Matamata. Mrs Molloy and Miss Madge Fairweather, of Cheltenham, are on a holiday visit to Mrs W. T. Darby, of Matamata. At the Licensing Committee meeting at Tauranga last Thursday renewals were granted the proprietors of the Tirau and Okoroire hotels. The sum of £67 was taken at last week’s Bed Cross shop, to which is to be added something near £l7 realised by the sale of a calf donated by Mr J. W. Finnerty. As a result of overtures made by the Town board and the Farmers’ Union the Sunday telephone hours at Matamata have been altered to 9 to 10 a.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. Mr E. C. Banks has been reappointed by the Government as Agricultural representative on the New Zealand Council of Education for a further term of three years. The first complete list presented by a commissioner, Mr J. F. Vosper, to the Town board, of subscriptions to the Salvation Army Appeal for £IO,OOO, totalled £23 7s 6d. Other lists are yet to come in. . The guessing competitions held in connection with the Red Cross shop last week were won by, sheep, Messrs A. W. Day and R. Hope (given back and sold for 30s) and a lamb, Mrs Darby senr. A meeting of all people interested in the erection of a cooperative dried milk factory at Matamata is being held in the Public hall on Tuesday evening. The evening will be addressed by Mr W. Goodfellow, managing director of the Waikato Co-opera-tive Dairy Coy., Ltd. A Red Cross concert dress will be held in connection with the “ copper trail chal"■Tenge,” Auckland district v. Wellington, on Thursday next, in the Matamata Town hall. A good company of Auckland artists will contribute the programme and an address on the subject of Red Cross work will be given by Mr C. F. Bickford. See advertisement. After many weeks awaiting plate glass for windows, the Stationers hall, and Mr H. Buekley’s boot emporium are now completed, and the business men are able to display their wares. The shop-fronts are extensive and allow for a display which is an indication of the excellent array of goods inside. Both windows are well-worth inspection and aro worthy of towns much larger than Matamata. At Tauranga on Saturday, among the matters brought before the Ministers for Lands and Railways was that of urging the Government to spend “ a few thousands” on putting the Kaimai road in order and keeping it so. It was urged that the Government would be more than recouped by the extra value the work would place on Government lands in the vicinity. Hon. Herries explained that he believed an arrangement had been come to with the Matamata County council to keep a surfaceman at work on the road. Among the properties disposed of by Messrs Finnerty and Darby during the past few weeks are 254 acres at Peria, to Mr H. Mogford, 185 acres on the Waharoa road, to Mr W. C. Vincent, 145 acres at Hinuera to Mr Tyler, 147 acres at Waharoa to Mr Noakes, 130 acres at Turanga-o-moana to Mr J. Lindsay, 125 acres at Matamata to Mr Freldon, 1100 acres at North Auckland to Mr G. Fussey, 150 acres at Waharoa to Mr Shepherd and 183 acres of Mr J. W. Simpson’s property to a Matamata buyer, and several town and small properties. Walton’s for groceries, provisions and household ironmongery. Stationers hall for Maxwell car at £250. Young lady desires position in the country as housekeeper. A pedigree Jersey bull (taken three championships) is for sale. The Valuation Department gives notice that an assessment court to hear objections from the county and town area will be held in Matamata on Friday, June 21st.
