PUTARURU.

The Putaruru branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union held a social and dance in the hall, on Wednesday evening. The weather which had been rather bad previously proved favourable for the night and there was a very good attendance, visitors being present from all the surrounding Mr H. Taylor made a most excellent M.C. while Mrs Barnes (piano), Mr Sayers (violin) and Mr Kimber (cornet) provided excellent music. Mr McAlpine sang “ The Village Blacksmith,” and for an encore rendered “ Mother Machree,” which were much appreciated. During the evening Mr McAlpine, district organiser, gave a very interesting speech on the object and organisation of the Union, and was greatly applauded on resuming his seat. -The chairman, apologised for the absence of Mr Goodfellow (Waikato Cooperative Dairy Co.), who could not attend through being on most important business, but his travelling representative Mr Blackm°r9 was present and the chairman called on him to give a short address. Mr Blackmore gave an outline of what his company had done and what they were doing concerning the dairy industry in general, and his speech was of much interest to the many farmers present. After supper dancing was again indulged in until the small hours of the morning, when those present wound up a most enjoyable evening by singing “ God save the King.”
