ANZAC DAY OBSERVATION.

Weather and all other conditions were favorable for the celebration of Anzac Day at Matamata. The people residing in the township and surrounding districts gave evidence of com- ■ memhible interest in that never to be forgotten event. The children connected with the District High school, numbering one hundred and fifty, were mustered at their headquarters by the headmaster, Mr Oarnachan, and under his leadership marched to the Town Hall to take part in a | meeting held there. This was one of the most inspiring sights of the day’s proceedings. The arrangements for the function were under the management of the Town Board and the clergymen of the district, and were carried out in a most harmonious manner. The chairman of the Town Board, Mr J. Price, occupied the chair, and was accompanied by Messrs J. F. Vosper, W. Gordon, J. Pohlen (members of the board), Mr Carnachan, master of the High school, and Revs. T. H. C. Partridge, R. W. Jackson and Mr W. Richards. The chairman delivered an admirable inspiring patriotic address, which called for hearty applause. He was followed by Messrs J. F. Vosper, R. Carnachan and J. Pohlen, who spoke in similar strains, all referring in glowing terms to the heroism of our New Zealand boys on the occasion they had met to commemorate. It should be mentioned that on. this occasion it was thought a fitting opportunity had come to move a vote of sympathy to the relatives who had lost, for a brief season, their loved ones in the present terrible conflict for freedom and righteousness. This vote was carried in solemn silence, the large audience stand-" ing the while with bowed heads. The following hymns were sung, Mr P. C. Ingham presiding at the piano : —“ Rock of Ages,” “ Onward Christian Soldiers,” “O God Our Help in Ages Past.” Memorial services were also held in several of the churches.
