RED CROSS WORK.

The Matamata Red Cross branch'held its monthly meeting on April 11th in the Town Hall, Matamata. There was a large gathering of ladies who were kept busily employed in finishing off garments, etc. till the close of the afternoon. Mesdames Darby and Laurie provided afternoon tea. The ladies discussed the advisability of opening a Red Cross shop in Matamata. On being informed by the secretary of the Peria Patriotic League that they had decided to do the same, it was thought better to call a meeting of both societies and make arrangements to open a shop on alternate months. A motion of sympathy was carried to Mr and Mrs Quinlan and Mrs J. Finnerty, who have lost a son and brother at the front; also to Mr and Mrs Yardley in the loss of their little daughter. The box packed for April contained the following: 16 pyjama suits, 7 flannel shirts, 1 nightingale, 9 face cloths, 28 pillowslips, 1 balaclava cap, 9 treasure bags, 5 pairs slippers, 14 shirts, 1 crepe shirt, 18 towels, 10 eye bandages, 30 handkerchiefs, 2 pairs socks, 2 Red Cross bags, 43 roller bandages. Included from Turanga-o-moana : 10 pyjama suits, 5 pairs slippers, 1 nightingale, 8 roller bandages, 2 Red Cross bags, 7 flannel shirts.
