A meeting of the Matamata Patriotic Association will be held on Tuesday evening next.

Miss Humphrey, who has been on a visit to Auckland and Waikato is now back in Matamata.

' Word has been received in Morrinsville that Sergeant J. C. R. Watts was killed on the Western front on March 30th.

The Peria branch of the Auckland Women’s Patriotic League will hold a patriotic social in the Matamata Public Hall on Friday, April 19th.

As a result of an outbreak of diphtheria the Matamata school was closed by the resolution of the school committee on Monday last. The school was fumigated, and was re-opened on Tuesday.

Trooper Gordon ‘Carolan and William Barugh, (N.Z.M.R.), left Matamata on Monday, on their return to camp. Others to return on Saturday were Sergt. Weir, N.Z.F.A., and Private Kilbride.

Mr C. Fitzgerald, who recently met with a trap accident, and was conveyed to Hamilton has recovered sufficiently to return to his home at Matamata.

Many Matamata and district people will be glad to hear that Private J. W. Lewin, who when volunteering’, bequeathed his farm, in the event of his death, to Patriotic funds, has returned. Private Lewin sustained severe gun-shot wounds, in France.

Despite one or two cold snaps the mosquito pest is still evident in Matamata. In conversation with the Health Inspector the “ Record ” representative was informed that Matamata was suffering in common with other districts at present.

At the show meeting on Friday special comment was made on the manner in which the local railway officials had assisted the exhibitors in unloading and loading cattle and horses. It was decided that a special vote of thanks be accorded them.

Mr R. Carnachan, of Auckland, has arrived in Matamata to take over the position of headmaster at the Matamata district high school. Mr and Mrs Malcolm left Matamata on Thursday last, the former to take over the temporary position of headmaster at the Kihikihi school.

A public meeting called bj the chairman of the Town board, Mr J. Price, was held on Thursday last to discuss the matter of providing relief for the sufferers through the King Country conflagration. It was decided to open subscription lists, in addition to those already circulated by the Farmers’ Union, and also to invite the hall committee to provide a picture evening. One pound each was donated towards working expenses by Messrs Price, Banks and Yosper, while Mr J. Steen stated that the operating expenses would also be donated. Mr W. A. Gordon was appointed treasurer to the fund.

Through coming into contact with a barb-wire fence while chasing calves, a returned soldier named Siddall sustained facial cuts, which necessitated attendance by Dr. Carolan.

We understand that the additions recently made to the list of subscribers to the Matamata telephone exchange entitles the subscribers to a two hours service on Sundays. Representations are to be made to the postmaster.

A young girl for housework is wanted. A second-hand bicycle is required. Mr Hooper, dentist, has recommenced practice at Tower Road after the Easter vacation. A junior girl for Messrs Hampson, Bell & Davys, Matamata office, is advertised for. Mr Chas. McFarlane, pianoforte tuner, is at present on a visit to Matamata and may be consulted at the boarding house. The Farmers’ Auctioneering company advise that it will save further trouble if the person who took a child’s chair from the March sale will return same to their Matamata branch. Mr Martin Williams, land agent of Hamilton, advertises that he requires particulars of several d'airy farms for cash buyers. He also requires particulars of a small farm in exchange for a hotel.
