TIRAU.
PATRIOTIC CONCERT. A concert in aid of the Red Triangle appeal, promoted by the ladies connected with the Tirau Red Cross branch, was held on Tuesday evening. The attendance was fully up to expectations so that the ladies ■houldbe pleased with their efforts. The concert programme was full of variety and included a number of well-known performers including Miss Nixon (Rotorua), who contributed in all nine items, besides playing most of the other artists accompaniments. This lady proved quite a favorite with the audience. Among the other performers were : —Miss Stewart, pianoforte solos; Miss Ring, songs, “ Bonnie Mary of Argyle,” “ Annie Laurie,” “ Molly Bawn ” ; Mrs Barnett, recitations (2); Mrs Alcorn (Putarnru), songs, “ Will o’th’ Wisp ” and “Sometimes in Summer”; Mrs Bear, songs, “ Until ” and another ; Mrs Rolfe, recitation, “My Lady’s Leap”; Mr Rolfe, recitation, “Ostler Joe”; Mr A. Yardlev, songs, “One of these Days,” Mate o’ Mine,” “ Thora ” and “Mother Machree.” The second half of the programme opened with a tableau “Wishes and Fishes” arranged by Mrs Litchfield, which was very nice in effect; showing careful tuition. Those who took part were Miss Hamlyn and Mr W. Henderson; Miss J. Marshall and Mr A. Couborough; Miss D. Main and Mr Kitson. The applause which greeted each item on the programme was a sure indication that the latter had met with full approval and it was generally considered that the concert was one of the best yet held in Tirau. At the conclusion of the concert Mr J. W. Anderson, on behalf of the ladies, thanked the performers for their efforts and stated that the function would result in about £3O being raised for the object of the evening. The concert was followed by supper and a dance, to which a large proportion of the people stayed. The hall floor was well prepared and excellent music was provided by Mrs Stewart (piano) and Mr L. Bell (violin). ' Extras were nicely played by Mrs Hamlin, Miss Hamlin and Mrs Brown. Mr M. Couborough was M.C. Considerable credit is due to the Tirau ladies for the manner in which the evening was conducted. It was another illustration of the good work that has been done by them throughout the war period. Mr J. McCarthy has sold his farm at Tirau.
