WALTON.
A dance was held in the hall on Wednesday evening and proved most enjoyable, a number of people being present from Ngarua and surrounding districts. Mr Guy Percy provided the music in his well-known inspiriting style. Mr G. W. Ross acted as M.C. Proceeds were in aid of the hall fund. On Sunday evening the harvest festival service was held and conducted by the Rev. Jackson, of Matamata (Presbyterian). The hall had been suitably arranged and decorated by a band of willing workers with the result that a splendid display of grains, fruit and vegetables were in evidence, proving that the harvest had indeed been bountiful. A large congregation assembled. Special hymns suitable to the occasion were sung, and an appropriate address given. All contributed to making the service most memorable and successful. On Monday evening a sale of fruit, vegetables, preserves, fowls, lamb, etc., was held as a sequel to the foregoing service when good prices were realised, after which supper was handed round and a social half-hour spent. The Rev. Jackson moved a hearty vote of thanks to all who had assisted in making the function such a distinct success. The sum realised amounted to £lB 15s. During the Hon. W. H. Herries’ visit to Te Aroha last week a deputation placed before him the need of increased accommodation at the Walton railway siding, the limited space at present in use for loading and unloading trucks being quite inadequate for the needs of this growing district. Also the urgent need of a more suitable building for a post office was pointed out. The Minister gave the deputation a most sympathetic hearing, and promised to see what could be done in the matter.
