Mr F. H. Earl has disposed of his grocery business at Matamata to Mr R. A.Walton, of Auckland. The latter takes over possession at the end of March.
The Farmers' Auctioneering Co. will sell the whole of Mr J. Follett's live and deadstock on Thursday next, February 28th. The lines include 45 good cows, draught horses, gig and gig horse.
In these days when prices for food are mostly soaring upwards, it is gratifying to hear of an 'attempt at reduction being made. Mr W. C. Vincent announces in his advertisement that the price of mutton joints will be reduced by one penny per pound.
Writing to his father from France Private Laurence Carolan (Essex Regiment) desires to convey to the local Red Cross ladies his grateful thanks for welcome Christmas gifts. Sergeant Fred Carolan, also in France, mentions meeting Lieut " Jim Farrell, an old Matamata boy, who was well.
Mr H. E. Pacey, manage!ng director of the N. Z. Dairy Association was on a visit to Matamata on Tuesday, and met the chairman of the County council and the riding members in connection with the damage done to the Waharoa-Matamata roads by the " Glaxo" motor lorries. The result at the conference will be reported to the council.
Mr J. Robertson, who has been manager of the Matamata "Glaxo" factory since the inception, and who has given every satisfaction in the position, has received promotion by Messrs J. Nathan and Co., and will leave Matamata. this week. Mr B. Barnes, late of Te Aroha West, will fill the position vacated by Mr Robertson at Matamata.
The Rotorua A. and P. Association will hold its annual show on Wednesday, March 13th (8 days before the Matamata show). Liberal prizes, some of which are specified in our advertising columns, are offered and for which there should be good competition from this district. Entries close on Saturday, March 2nd. Schedules may be obtained from the secretary, Mr J. S. Vicker.
The member of the Education council, Mr E. C. Banks, informs' us that the application of the Matamata School committee for a high school at Matamata has been favorably received by the council. It is probable that applications will immediately be called for the position of teacher for the high school, which will in the meantime be conducted in the Technical school building. Ultimately a new room will be added to the school.
Lieut. Norman Robinson, of Sydney, nephew of Mr and Mrs J. Robinson, of Matamata, was on a visit to his relatives here this week. Lieut Robinson, has seen much active service, having been through that most important series of battles, the Somme push, where he was wounded in the hand, arm and leg. The first named wound was so severe that the first finger was amputated. Lieut. Robinson will shortly leave again for the war zone.
