Mr J. Fitzgerald, of Matamata, had the misfortune to lose a tenton stack of this year’s hay by fire on Tuesday. It is alleged that the outbreak was caused by children smoking near the stack. Notice appears that the eighth show will be held on the Matamata A. and P. Association’s show-ground on Thursday, March 21st. Schedule of prizes may be had upon application to the secretary, Mr B. Blennerhassett. At the school committee meeting on Tuesday, notice that the school will be required as a polling place for the licensing committee election to be held on Tuesday, March 12th, was received from the returning officer. The Te Aroha Jockey Club’s annual meeting will be held on Saturday, March 9th, nominations closing on Saturday, February 16th at 9 p.m. Pocket programmes may be obtained from Mr E. 0. Nash, Te Aroha. A meeting of the 1 Matamata Fish and Game Conservation society was held last week for the purpose of discussing business and iqfusing new life into the society. Mr E. G. Clarke (late secretary at Putaruru) was appointed secretary. Fifteen new members were enrolled on the night, and the secretary informs us that six more have joined since. It was reported that twenty young pheasants were liberated a fortnight ago, and more consignments are promised. It was decided to inspect various streams within the boundaries in view of a promised supply of trout. The Auckland society anticipates having half-a-million fry for liberation. The following letter was forwarded to Mr and Mrs Kemp, or Okauia, last week : —“ Please accept the accompanying wreath as a small token of sympathy and respect to the memory of your son, the late Private Kemp, from a few of the mothers, who have boys of their own at the front, from this district." From Mesdames E. G. Beeson, W. Blennerhassett, F. Barugh, G. Buckley, J. F. Carolan, R. Connell, J. Cummings, H. Delaney, G. J. Duxfield, T. Dawson, E. M. Gray, J. Harding (sen.), J. Mateer, D. Morrow, F. Payze and M. Stanley. The following letter was received by Mrs Carolan this week: “Okauia, February 4, 1918; Mrs Carolan and other ladies who so kindly sent the wreath to be placed on the grave of the late Private Kawenata Te Keepa —We return our heartfelt thanks for their kind sympathy and thoughtfulness, and sincerely hope that their sons who are fighting for King and Country may all return safely.” Signed Keepa Taiporutu, Moepai Taiporutu, Tina Wereta, Rangitawliia Te Keepa.
