Brief Mention of all Minor Happenings in Matamata and Vicinity.
Mr Chas. McFarlane, pianoforte tuner, is at present on a visit to the district and may be consulted byletter at the Commercial Boarding House. Or. E. C. Banks, at the county council meeting, on Wednesday, predicted that valuations on some lands in the Patetere riding would be raised 2000 per cent, when the new valuation is made. The rainfall as registered by Mr F. Shannon, at Tirau, for the month of December was 2.13 inches. Rain fell on twelve days, the maximum being .65 inches on December 7th. At the meeting of the Matamata County council on Tuesday, it was decided that the day of meeting be altered to the second Friday in each month, the alteration to come into effect in March. The proprietress of Almadale House, Matamata, advises that she has single rooms to let to the travelling public, and that hot and cold baths are available morning and evening. The tariff is moderate. A notice is inserted in this issue advising that Mr J. W. Moreland has been appointed agent for the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation, Ltd.; and he is prepared to accept risks of fire and accident at the lowest rates. Mr. T. Heaps, who has been asssciated with the Tower Hairdressing and Billiard Saloon for some months, gives notice that he has re-opened Mr W. Mclntyre's Saloons, and seeks a share of public patronage. The rainfall for the month of December, as taken by Mr Kirkness, totalled 3.07 inches. Rain fell on thirteen days, the heaviest fall being 1.13 inches on December 28th. The total rainfall for the year was 65.24 inches. That the demand for building sections in Matamata still exists was demonstrated last week when sixteen i-acre sections on the Roche estate, on the Peria road were disposed of by the agent within twenty four hours. In consequence of his impending departure from the district the ■whole of Mr C. D.'Dawson's household furniture will shortly be offered for sale by auction at Matamata. The sale will afford residents an excellent opportunity of securing good furniture at fair rates. During the past month considerable activity has been displayed on the Matamata Tennis courts and it has been thought possible to revive the Matamata club. On Saturday next a tennis afternoon will be held on the courts, at which- intending members are specially invited to attend. Afternoon tea wilt be provided. When riding a young horse in Matamata on Monday, Mr. Stan. Bripdle was thrown on to the metal in. Tower road and was rendered unconscious. The horse lashed out with its hind legs but luckily missed the horseman. Mr Brindle was taken to Mr Kelso's pharmacy where Dr. Carolan made an examination. Fortunately the injuries consisted of nothing more than severe bruises. At the meeting of the Matamata county council on Tuesday, Cr. Carr-Rollett spoke strongly on the question of certain valuations in the county. He said it was manifestly unfair to over-value a property. No refund could be made by the council when rates were once paid, thus it was practically taking money under false pretences. In the case under notice the ratepayer was rated for buildings which were not on the property.
