UNITED FRIENDLY SOCIETIES’ PICNIC.
At IVBoprinsville. The prospects of a wet day to usher in the New Year did not prevent a good attendance at the Morrinsville United Friendly Societies’ fourth annual picnic which was held at Thomas’ Plantation, Hamilton road, on New Years’ Day. As usual the children were in predominance and everything was done to cater for their wants. A huge Christmas tree upon which was hung a great variety of toys for the younger ones attracted a good deal of attention and from it every child six years old and under received a gift. The best part of the day was taken up with sports and the committee was successful in getting through the long programme in spite of the rain which commenced to fall during the afternoon and drove the people homewards. The following is the result of the various races: — Boys 5-6 years--L. Dyke 1, J. Norman 2. Boys, 5-6 years—W. Hague 1, H. Crowe 2. Girls, 5-6 years —M. Foubister I. J. Roffey 2. Girls, 5-6 years —D. The trophies won were presented after the races and the favourable comments passed upon them should amply repay the ladies committee, of which Mrs Seville was the leading spirit, for their painstaking services in choosing them. Owing to the rain the picnic was unfortunately terminated between 3 and 4 o’clock, yet no one was heard to grumble and a most successful day’s outing was drawn to a close, the credit of which was due to the energetic committee consisting of Mesdames Seville, Rodgers and Dickinson, Messrs Neels, Barlow, Haynes, Syers, Rodgers, Rye, Baker, and, Strand who worked hard to ensure that everyone had an enjoyable time.
