STATEMENT BY G. H. ANDERSEN, PRESIDENT, AUCKLAND TRADES COUNCIL, N.Z.F.O.L.
9th May, 1978 The action of Joe Hawke and Roger Rameka in leaving the disputed area of Bastion Point indicates a firm interest on the Protesters’ part to unite the Maori people for a just settlement on the Bastion Point issue. The time is now to indicate that the Trades Council has long sought a situation of Maori unity on this
question, and we have long since been very critical of those interests who have deliberately exacerbated the differences between the Protesters and a section ol the Elders. The ‘‘Green Ban” still remains and there is no way we will allow private interests to exploit that land. We call on all parties that are concerned with a 'just settlement of the I issue to intercede [now and convert the Protesters Leaders’ action into a positive train of events for a just settlement.
