Hawaiian Newspaper
Michael Walker a former Maori President of the University of Auckland, now studying at the East-West Centre in Hawaii completing a Ph.D. has sent to MANA a copy of Kalo. This is a news-' paper published by the Hawaiian Coalition of Native Claims and deals with the history of grievances of the Hawaiian people. Michael’s letter explains its aims more clearly. E te iwi, tena koutou katoa,
Enclosed is a copy of Kalo (taro), the first issue of a paper published by the Hawaiian Coalition of Native Claims. It brings together a considerable amount of historical information on Hawaii’s annexation by the U.S.A, that would not be readily available from other sources. A myth of racial harmony is projected through the media here, yet there is clearly no basis for it. This has its origins in the overthrow of the Constitutional Hawaiian monarchy in 1893 and I do not believe that there can be racial harmony until this major grievance is corrected. The Hawaiians have shown considerable interest in what goes on in New Zea-
land and have read Mana when it gets here, however, as at home, their movements have money shortages and must rely on sources such as Mana for their information about other struggles. Therefore regular exchanges of information, if they could be established through Mana and possibly Kalo, would almost be certainly valued here. No reira, kia ora mai ano, Arohanui, Michael Walker.
