PACIFIC ISLANDERS’ EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE CENTRE PROSPECTUS FOR 1978 The PIERC is a new development within the Department of Education which the government has established at Herne Bay, Auckland, to assist Pacific Island migrants (and other immigrants whose native language is not English) to understand English as the language of communication. Problems associated within acculturation and adaptation to the New Zealand way of life are also included with in the scope of our work. The Centre offers opportunities in a wide range of language, cultural and social activities for all New Zealanders; especially social workers, teachers, doctors, lawyers, business people, students and housewives, to learn about the Pacific Islands way of life. Education Programmes in Industry Communication English is taught to immigrant workers in industry during the day by the Centre’s orientation tutors. Curricula vary to include relevant social skills such as understanding and completing official forms, the procedure for the purchase of a house, and the use of civic amenities. TIMETABLE 1.
