Teachers
The Education Department’s ‘itinerant Maori teacher’ scheme is in big demand. There are 30 itinerant teachers of Maori helping to develop Maori Studies programmes in primary schools throughout the country, says Education Minister, Mr Gandar. He says their work is very effective and districts not covered by the scheme are pressing for the scheme to be extended. However, Mr Gandar says any increase of Maori teachers “must be considered along with other new policy proposals.”
