Where are all the Justice’s?
The Minister of Justice, Mr Thomson, wants more women, Maoris and other Polynesians involved in the justice system. “Obviously ways must be found to encourage more Maori and Polynesian citizens of standing to accept office and participate in Court work,” Mr Thomson said in Wellington recently. He noted that only about
five per cent of New Zealand’s Justice’s of the Peace were non-European and only one per cent were involved in court work. Mr Thomson said he could only accept as Justice’s people recommended to him by MP’s. The time was ripe for a review of Representation with the aid of various local ethnic groups and groups which could represent the interests of women, he said.
