Rotuma / Maori

Mrs Anne (‘Ane’) Rachea Antonio, of Suva, Fiji, the only surviving direc descendant of. Petera am Ruatangaere, the Maor couple who first introduced Christianity to the island of Rotuma, about 400 miles N.N.E. of Fiji, ’celebrated her 85th birthday last month (September). Mrs Antonio’s great grandparents (Petera, e member of the Aupouri tribe and Ruatangaere a Ngapuhi built- Rotuma Island's firs Christian chapel in 1828 Their daughter, Maran garangi, who was Mr< Antonio’s grandmother bore Captain Tremolin’s son, Rai Tremolin (Mrs Antonio’; father). Daptain Tremolir was the commander of the French ship, “'Bayonnaise’ who visited Rotuma in 1828

These Maoris were adherants of the Maori (Wesley) Mission of Hokianga who landed on Rotuma from the whaler “Caroline”. Mrs Antonio who is a great grandmother plans to visit Te Kao, Kororareka (now Russell), and Hokianga next year to mark the 150th anniversary of the landing of her ancestors on Rotuma Island. Most of her children and grandchildren live in New Zealand and Australia.
