Otara Health

Continued from front page

tore the doctor was able to see them. People who can express themselves in English and know all the tricks of getting to the doctor quickly are always on the advantage! This is only logical. Babies and young children who cried incessantly got to the doctor quicker, but those who suffered and could not scream had to suffer a long wait.

This problem will be solved by the doctor agreeing, to employ a qualified nurse who is registered with the Health Department. She will be helping the doctor within the surgery. Also she must be

able to speak some Polynesian languages and understand the different traditions and cultures of the Otara mixed-race community. She will interpret and help the patients understand what the doctor asks and suggests them to do. The enormous member of patients that the doctor sees a day is over 80 or more, especially in winter. This is because Otara community has not got the Medical Centre and the number of doctors they deserve. It was appreciated in the meeting the hard work and the long hours that the doctor concerned had to tolerate for so long, and thus the purpose of the meeting, to try and solve some problems for the Otara Community and for the doctor who serves it. You can start to help us, if you known of any nurse who answers to the qualifications described above by writing to Mana, P.O. Box 704, Auckland.
