Funny Corner

About 50 Yandarra School pupils aged between 9-10, were experiencing a Teach-In at the Mangere Marae, when 3 members of the Youth Aid Section of South Auckland arrived. They were Mr Papa Nathan, Mr Matheson, and Mr Anderson. Taru Rankin, in his enthusiasm to present them as friendly policemen to the children, nicknamed the two Pakehas “Starsky & Hutch” to which the children responded with enthusiasm. After a short introduction of themselves and their work, they both sat down. Taru again introduced the third speaker, but this time leaving it up to the children to give an appropriate name for Mr Nathan. Taru R; Okay children have you got a name for Mr Nathan? Children: Yes! Taru R: Let’s have it then! Children: (unanimously shouted) Huggy Bear!
