Call to ‘Maorify’ the Maori Affairs Dept.

A guaranteed quota of Maoris for government departments and a more “Maorified” Department of Maori Affairs were two requests made at a recent Public Service Association conference on race relations. An Auckland Trades’ Council representative, Mr Syd Jackson, made several proposals designed to give Maoris a more effective say in government agencies.

He said a guaranteed proportion of Maoris should be employed in the PSA and this should later cover othpr

departments with Welfare and Justice being accorded special priority. He suggested the proportion be not less than double the Maori proportion of the total population. The PSA should set up a committee of Maoris to “Maorify” the Department of Maori Affairs at all levels and determine the methods of employment selection within the department.

Mr Jackson’s recommendations will be forwarded to the PSA Executive for consideration.
