RATES OF POSTAGE ON LETTERS, BOOK-PACKETS, AND NEWSPAPERS, WITH THE REGULATIONS AFFECTING THE POSTAGE, TRANSMISSION, AND DELIVERY OF THE SAME. LETTERS. I.—lnlikd Letters. From any nart of New Zealand to any other part of New Zealand:— Not exceeding A oz 2d. Exceeding | oz, and not exceeding 1 oz. 4a. „ 1 oz, „ 2 oz. Sd. And so on, increasing fourpence for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. 2.—To the United Kingdom. By Southampton or by direct shipNot exceeding | oz ' Exceeding \ oz, and not exceeding 1 oz. Is. „ loz „ 2oz 2s. And so on, increasing one shilling for every addition;! 1 ounce or fraction of an ounce. By Marseilles— Not exceeding £ oz in weight lOd. Exceeding -, oz, and not exceeding 1 oz Is Bd. „ 1 oz, „ 2 oz 3s 4d. „ 2 oz, ~ 3 oz 5s Od. Every ounce after the first, Is Bd. 3.—To British Colonies and Foreign Co un fit its (For which mails are made up direct.) Not exceeding £ oz 6d. Exceeding oz, and not exceeding loz Is. 1 „ 2cz 2s And so on, increasing one shilling for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. in the following cns"S, where special rates are pnyable. 4.—To France and Algeria and Foreign Countries, through France. For these Rates see Table (U.) s.—To TnE Continent of Europe via Trieste. Not exceeding \ oz . Is. Exceeding h oz, and not exceeding loz 2s. „ loz, „ 2oz 4s. And so on, increasing two shillings for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. 6.—To Syria and Turkey. Letters will be forwarded via Alexandria and Jaffa (unless marked fur transmission via the United Kingdom), and will be charged as follows : Not exceeding \ oz Is. Exceeding \ and not exceeding 1 oz.. 2s. Newspapers, each Id. And so on, increasing two shillings for every Additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. Letters for Turkey and Syria may be forwarded in the mail to* Alexandria, and thence to Juffa, upon the payment of the following rates: — Not exceeding \ oz Os lid „ loz Is lOd For every additional ounce or fraction of an oz Is lOd Newspapers, not exceeding 2 czs. 0* Id v „ 4 ozs. Os 2d Letters for the lonian Islands may be fcrwnrded in the mail for Alexandria thence via Trieste, upon the. payment of the following rates:— Not exceeding |oz Os 6d „ loz Is Od Every additional ounce or fraction of an oz Is Od Newspapers, each Oi Id 7,—-To China and the Eastern Archipelago. Letters addres*ed to Hongkong, Penang, Singapore, and any part of China or Japan, the Phiilippine Islands, Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Labuan, the Moluccas, and Siaro, are chargeablj as follows: — Not exceeding \o% Is. Exceeding £ oz, and not exceeding loz 2s. And so on, increasing two shillings for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. B.—To Nav»l Officers on Foreign Stations. Letter* addressed to officers serving on board any of her Majesty's ships on a foreign station, whfn fent through the United kingdom, are chargeable as follows: — Not exceeding | oz Is. Exceeding \ oz, and not exceeding Icz 2s. „ foz „ 2oz 4s. And so on, increasing two shillings for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. 9.—To Naval Seamen and Soldiers. Letters sent to or by Seamen and Soldiers in her Majesty's service will be transmitted within the colony, and bet wen the colony and any postoffice in the United kingdom, at a charge of ONE PENNY, provided that the following regulations are observed:— 1. Each letter must not exceed half an ounce in weight. 2. It must be superscribed with the name of the writer, his description or class in the vessel or ngimeut, and signed by the officer at the time in command. 3. The postage must be prepaid. Every letter of this description posted or received in this colony, not in accordance with the foregoing regulations, will be treated as an ordinary letter. 10.—Free Letters. Letters on the public service of her Majesty's naval and military forces are exempted from the payment of postage, if bearing the words " On Her Majesty's Service," and the signature of the officer in commaud of the force on the service of which the letter is despatched. Put such letters cannot be transmitted by any irregular route, or one entailing additional expense on the colonial Government. Letters on the public service of the General Government of the colony are transmitted fn e icrvico only," and the signature of some officer of the General Government authorised to irauk letters. 11.— Registered Letters. Registration Fee to places within the colony 6d. Registration Fee to Australian colonies, India, and the United Kingdom Is. In addition to the ordinary postage chargeable on any letter—except in special cases.
