RATES OF POSTAGE ON LETTERS, BOOK-PACKETS, AND NEWSPAPERS, WITH THE REGULATIONS AFFECTING THK POSTAGE, TRANSMISSION, AND DELIVERY OF THE SAME. LETTERS. I.—lnland Letters. From any part of New Zealand to any other part of New Zealand : Not exceeding ± oz 2d. Exceeding oz, and not exceeding 1 oz. 4d. „ 1 oz, „ 2 oz. Bd. And so on, increasing fourpence for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. 2.—To the United Kingdom. By Southampton or by direct ship— Not exceeding ± oz 6d. Exceeding 4 oz. and r.ot c xcecding 1 oz. Is. „ loz ~ 2oz 2s. And so on, increasing one shilling for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. By Marseilles— Not exceeding | oz in weight lOd. Exceeding \ o/, and not exceeding 1 oz Is Bd. „ i oz, „ 2oz 3s 4d. „ 2 oz, 3 oz os Od. Every ounce after the first, Is Bd. 3.—To British Colonies and Foreign Countries (For which mails are made up direct.) Not exceeding oz 6d. Exceeding ± oz, and not exceeding loz Is. „ 1 2oz 2s. And 60 on, increasing one shilling for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. in the following casrs, where special rates are payable. 4.__ To France and Algeria and Foreign Countries, through France. Letters will be forwarded via Alexandria and Jaffa (unless marked for transmission via the United Kingdom), and will be charged as follows : Not exceeding £ oz Is. Exceeding £ and not exceeding 1 oz.. 2s. Newspapers, each Id. And so on, increasing two shillings for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. Letters addressed to Hongkong, Penang, Singapore, and any part of China or Japan, the Philippine Islands, Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Labuau, the Moluccas, and Siam, are chargeable as follows: — Not exceeding b 07. Letters addressed to officers serving on board any of her Majesty's ships on a foreign station, when sent through the United Kingdom, are chargeable as follows: — Not exceeding | oz Is. Exceeding h oz, and not exceeding loz 2s. „ foz „ 2oz 4s. And so on, increasing two shillings for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. 9—To Naval Seamen and Soldiers.

Letters sent to or by Seamen and Soldiers in her Majesty's service will be transmitted within the colony, and between the colony and any postoffice in the United Kingdom, at a charge of one penny, provided that the following regulations are observed : 1. Each letter must not exceed half an ounce in weight. 2. It must be superscribed with the name of the writer, his description or class in the vessel or regiment, and signed by the officer at the time in command. 3. The postage must be prepaid. Every letter of this description posted or received in this colony, not in accordance with the foregoing regulations, will be treated as an ordinary letter. 10.—Free Letters. Letters on the public service of her Majesty's naval and military forces are exempted from the payment of postage, if bearing the words " On Her Majesty's Service," and the signature of the officer in command of the force on the service of which the letter is despatched. But such letters cannot be transmitted by any irregular route, or one entailing additional expense on the colonial Government. . Letters on the public service of the General Government of the colony are transmitted free by post, if bearing the words "On the public §erriw? only," and the signature of some officer of the General Government authorised to frank letters. 11. —Registered Letters. Registration Fee to places within the colony 6d. Registration Fee to Australian colonies, India, and the United Kingdom Is.
