THE RIVERTON GOLDFIELD.

Southland at last seems to be in a fair way to have a goldfield of its own at Riverton. The discovery of gold near that place* will lead, no doubt, to prospecting the country in the direction of Caples' discoveries at Te Anau and Kakapo Lake, and in which quarter Dr Hector has placed on record that rich mineral lodes will, no doubt, be found, as well as gold among the lower ranges which lie in from the sea coast. Riverton was pointed out as in this auriferous band, and Dr Hector, in his valuable report, says gold bearing rocks are met with at several points. For some time past the people of Riverton have indulged in the belief that the band of auriferous ground that passes along the West Coast came in this direction, and Mr C. H. Williamson, of the Nugget exploration celebrity, addressed some cheering remarks on this subject to the papers, which was locally made much of. The sequel is best told by our contemporary's correspondent, the Southland Times,' which we condense " Riverton, Sept 19. "Two men of M'Kenzie's party arrived here last Friday and sold 5 ozs of gold, being their work for about three days—some days of the week being rather wet to work. This makes nearly 30 ozs got by this party alone since they have commenced to work that claim (about one month). 44 On Saturday morning two men belonging two another party of five, who went to prospect about ten days ago, returned for provisions, and reported the discovery of a quartz-reef. On trying a small piece of the reef brought into town, very good indications of payable gold were found. The discoverers mean to try all they can to follow the lead, and to give the whole thing a fair trial. The same party, whilst prospecting, made 1 j ozs in one day, to be divided amongst four men."
