Concerning the lost City of Dunedin, the 'Evening Star ' says:—"lntelligence has been received by the Phoebe of the result of an expedition sent out by Major Richardson and several gentlemen to search the coast near Cape Terawiti for traces of the lost vessel. A gentleman named J. W. Rayer, to whom the task was eutrusted, has returned, and reports that in a bay west of Tonguo Point, at several other bays and points, in fact all along the coast to Sinclair's Head, he found many articles, such as cabin seats, tables, &c, which undoubtedly belonged to the steamer. He also proceeded to investigate, and found correct, a report which had been current for some days in Wellington to the effect that a young Maori girl, named Inacmarama, had whilst proceeding home on horseback, from Wellington to Terawiti on the same evening the vessel left port, and when about a mile from home, seen a steamer close among the rocks, apparently beyond the command of those on board. All seemed to be in confusion."

The'Bruce Herald' says that 'the Government grant of 250 vols, has just been added to the Tokomairiro District Library. The books are all handsomely half bound in calf, gilt lettered, and are a most valuable accession to the library. They comprise a great variety of standard works adapted to the tastes of all readers." The 'Evening Star' remarks:—'-Those who sigh for the glories of a Blackwall dinner of whitebait will be glad to learn they have only to visit Christchurch to obtain it. The ' Press' says : «' The river at Kaiapoi appears to be as fully stocked this season as ever with these highly prized and delicious fish. On Mouday and Tuesday last the banks of the river presented quite a business-like appearance from the number of eager fishermen, including a number of Maoris, who at this season come from their pah about a mile from Kaiapoi at early dawn, and squat themselves by the river all day long watching their nets and cooking their fish. The largest portion of the fish, however, the Maoris dry in the sun, and store away for use during the winter months. The prices on Monday ranged from sixpence to tenpence for a pint or pannikin full, but as the season advances the prices will come down to about % a shilling a bucketful, sometimes a little lower. Numbers may also be seen fishing for smelts, little fish about six or eight inches long. These are more prized by some people than whitebait. About January or February we may expect to see the Kowai, a fish weighing about seven or eight pounds." We observe by the Melbourne paper that the pilchard, a fish new to Australian waters has recently visited Hobson's Bay in perfect shoals, and been caught and sold at 6d » bucketful. After this it is certainly not improbable that both of these erratic fish may take it into their heads to visit Otago."
