To the Editor of the Lake Wakatip Mail. Sir, —It is with feelings of regret that the reefers here have learnt of the destruction of the branch Bank of New Zealand at Charleston, and that the sub-agent, Mr Ross, has been so great a sufferer by losing his private property. We trust the bank will be speedily rebuilt, and that Mr Ross will conduct its business as before. Mr Ross has gained the good wishes of the residents of the Shotover, as well as those of Skipper's, for his kindness of manner and thorough business habits in transacting the miners' business.
By giving this space in your valuable journal, you will confer a favor upon A Reefer. The Reefs, Skipper's, 20th July, 1865.
To the Editor of the Lake Wakatip Mail. Sir,—May I suggest, through you, that a renewed movement might be made in obtaining a road to Skipper's Gully, and from thence to the Reefs. lam quite certain that if the people will only act with the Queenstown Improvement Committee, and assert, at the re-election of a fresh body, these and other objects, which it has been my duty to bring before the public, can be accomplished. The Government have been appealed to several times, and have always, I must say, promised liberally. If Quartz-reefing is to become really a valuable industry, machinery must be placed on the ground and without roads this is impossible. The opportunity is a good one and I may say in addition to these arguments that I am bringing at the present moment the value of the auriferous and mineral wealth of this district before Victorian machinists and capitalists. With the making of this road to Skipper's, I am confident the material advancement of the Western portion of this district is at stake. I am, &c., A Member of the Committee. Queenstown, 21st July, 1865.
We take the following from the 1 Dunedin Herald':—'" A meeting of the creditors of Messrs S. S. & A. Lazarus, was held this morning in the Provincial Hotel, when a statement of liabilities and assets were laid before them, the former amounting to about £25,000, and the latter to within a few hundred pounds of the same sum. Beyond the appointment of Messrs Davie, (M'Landress, Hepburn & Co.), and Walcott, (Bright Bros. & Co.) to look into the affairs of the insolvents, no business was transacted.
