The ' Southland News' blames some of its upcountry visitors for a series of practical jokes perpetrated in its quiet town, and especially condemns the letting off of a quantity of crackers as likely to create a fire. It concludes its re- 4 marks thus:—"The subsequent exploits of the night, and the crowning act, in the hoisting of the mail signal, are worthy of the master minds originating, aud the skill executing these projects. If the deviser of this last truly original triumph of intellect will call on us and establish his claim to the honor —which another may dishonestly dispute with him —he shall receive a fitting token of our recognition of genius in the shape of a handsome cap and bells, with a rattle thrown in by way of accompaniment."
