A SLIGHT MISTAKE.

To the Editor of the Lake Wakatip Mail. Sib,—ln your paper of the sth instant you notice the receipt of a letter from a gentleman resident at the Arrow, complaining that jou do not give greater publicity to matters of daily occurrence in that district. As writer of that letter allow me to quote the exact words it contained : " The * Mail' is getting into disfavor amongst your Arrow readers, as tin y complain it is too exclusively confined to Queenstown interests." No one here complains that your Arrow correspondent does not carefully note every local occurrence worth recording ; but it is patent to any impartial reader that en general topics, your paper is merely the exponent of the exclusive of the residents on the shores of Lake Wakatip, rather than those of the inhabitants of the Wakatip Goldfield proper. Yours respectfully, The Writer of the Letter in Question. TWe never allow a correspondent (official or otherwise) at any particular place to dictate to us ■what our policy should be. We consider ourselves the best judges upon these matters, and if we attempted to pi ase every locality or individual resident in any particular district, we should phase nobody. The Head of the Lake and the Nokomai, where we have no regular correspondents, have more reasons for complaining than the Arrow. We are glad, however, judging from the tenor of the above letter, that u e verv local occurren; e" on the Arrow has been faithfully reported, and in every instance recorded. " Upon general subjects, we invariably writefor communities resident in the province, and not for any particular locality, as it appears the wiiter would wish us to do. In fact, upon a careful perusal we are at a loss to know what are the desires of " The writer of the letter in question." Besides, the mere assertion of a wiiter that we are in disfavor at any place is no proof that we are so, or that it is likely to affect us. The mere submission (with all due respect) to the dictation of a solitary individual or a small community would be the sacrifice of our own independence and freedom and, as a matter of course, the freedom of the W.M.]
