We are requested to acknowledge the receipt by the hon. secretary of the Hospital of the following letter, and the amount enclosed therein. We shall always be glad to acknowledge simi.ar contributions, and hope the example shown by the Queenstown bench of magistrates will be generally followed. Mr 1 urner, a carpenter and tradesman of this town, contributed the box that has done so much service, as an annual subscription :
Queenstown, oth August, 1864. Dear Sir,—l very much regret my inability, from illness, to attend the meeting of the Hospital Committee to-morrow I have, however, great pleasure in forwarding you herewith enclosed the contents of the Hospital box in the Court house. rru.. 1 - 1,„„ ir> tlin liouto about three weeks, and it contained up to last Thursday the sum of £9 3s. 6d. Of this sum £6 is the contribution of James O'Brien and party, the fortunate holders of a rich claim on Sutherland's Beach. I am, dear Sir, yours faithfully, It. Beetham. H. Gordon, Esq., Hon. Sec., Wakatip Hospital. The following letter has been handed us for publication. It is a reply to the petition lately forwarded from Queenstown and Arthur s Point in reference to Messrs Ryan and Bonds bridge and the state of the road between Queenstown and Arthur's Point. It is to be hoped the Government will, with the least possible delay, complete the purchase of this bridge as its benefit is one of a public nature: — Provincial Secretary's Office, Dunedin, 29nd July, 1864.
Sir, —I have beer, directed by his Honor the Deputy Superintendent to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the sth instant, submitting for the consideration of his Honor the Superintendent a memoriitl from the miners, packers and other residents at Arthurs Point and neighborhood praying that the Government will, by purchasing the bridge at that place, relieve them from the heavy charges to which they are now subjected by the proprietor; and also bringing under notice the state of the rood between Queenstown and Arthur's Point. I am now to request that you will be good enough to inform the memorialists that the Government regret they have no funds at their disposal at present which they could devote to the purchase of the bridge as requested, but that thev will pi ice a sufficient sum for the purpose on the Estimates to be submitted at the next session of the Provincial Council. With regard to the state of the road referred to by the memorialists, I am to add that the attention of the proper officer has been directed to it. Great Britain arrived in Hobson'sßay on the 24th July, after a fine passage of 58 days from Liverpool. Amongst her 500 passengers was Mr Roberts, the champion billiard player of the world, who is about to visit the various Australian colonies, and will, we hear, play a match in Dunedin, before leaving this quarter of the world.
One of the largest funeral processions ever seen in Queenstown took place on Saturday last, when the remains of Mr Henry Mason, a miner, who died in the Hospital, were removed from Bracken's Hotel to thecem tery. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Father Duhig. lhe decased was a shareholder in the claim at Butchers Point, known as the Sunny Boys. As he hits lelt no will, his interest in this will fall into the hands of the Curator of Intestate Estates lor legal distribution amongst hia relatives.
