"Wakatip Mail" Office,
July Ist, 1864. In consequence of the frightful state of the roads, and to some extent through the weather, business has been everything but brisk. Communication is now with difficulty carried on with any district. To Arthur's Point, four miles away, the road is as bad as any other portion, and packers dread it. The Government made it but no provision seems to have been made for its maintainance. Under these circumstances it is difficult to quote prices, as a very small per centage is accepted from a good mark, and from really cash customers sales are sometimes affected below Dunedin or Invercargill rates. Engagements are fairly met, but to some extent with difficulty. The changes are very slight, as will be seen by quotations, though carriage has again risen from Invercargill to £2O per ton. Hams and Bacon have become quite unsaleable, and with present heavy stocks are not likely to improve. Kerosene has slightly given way and prices in quantity may be quoted 7s 3d to Bs. Butter is almost unsaleable, and ranges over a wide list. From lid to Is 6d.
Potatoes are very firm at with an upward tendency. Oats are scarce and rising in value. Last sales 14s 6d.
Bags. As in every other place are not obtainable except at fancy prices. Cigars of Swiss and Manilla fabric are not in the market. Aromatic Tobacco is sold at Melbourne prices Teas incline upward.
The flour market fluctuates between £6O and £65, and next advices of the result of the Adelaide speculators are looked forward to with interest.
