QUEENSTOWN FIRE BRIGADE.
A meeting of the Committee was held od Wednesday evening at Bracken's Hotel. Present : Messrs. Bell (chair), Bracken, Horn, Chamberlain, Carey, Croft and Gordon. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Secretary read the copy of a letter to be forwarded to his Honor the Superintendent: — Queenstown, April 6,1864. Hon. Sir,—Your letter, dated 28th March, came duly to hand. I laid the same before a general meeting of the Brigade on the 4th inst., when the following resolution was proposed by Mr. Bracken, seconded by Mr. Horn, and carried unanimously—" That the Secretary write a letter of thanks to his Honor the Superintendent for his kind assistance and attention in behalf of this Brigade." I have therefore to convey to your Honor the unanimous thanks of the Queenstown Volunteer Fire Brigade for the prompt, kind, and valuable assistance your honor has rendered the said Brigade. Wishing your Honor may live long with health, and may this Province prosper under your able governance, is the desire of Your most obedient Servant, H. Chamberlain, Secretary. John Hyde Harris, Esq. Captain Bell would state that Mr. Pearce was about to visit Melbourne, and had kindly offered to ascertain for the Brigade all particulars respecting a fire engine, and for that purpose he had called the meeting. The committee accepted Mr. rearce's offer with thanks, and instructed the Secretary to communicate with that gentleman before he left the district, and give all directions necessary. ♦ A lady making inquiries of a boy about his father, an intemperate man, who had been ill for some time, asked whether he had regained his appetite. " No, ma'am," said the boy, " not exactly; his appetite is very poor, but his drinkatite is as good as ever." Clear the Court—Some confusion having occurred during a trial in the Court-house, Ballinasloe, the judge ordered the court to be cleared, whereupon the crier executed the order by this announcement: " Now, then, all ye blackguards that isn't lawyers must lave the coort."
