ABSTRACT OF AUCTION SALES. This Day. Reuben Harris, at his Rooms, at 12 o'clock — Bottled porter, butter and sugar. At 2 o'clock, on the premises, Beach-street—Fancy goods, &c., &c. Ip the Supreme Court Criminal Sittings on Wednesday, March 2nd., the following' prisoners were discharged, the Grand Jury having found 44 n0 true hill" in each case:—Christian Lucas, cattle stealing at Frankton. Herman Burneau, cattle stealing at Qucenstown. John Rei 1, stealing from the person. John Smith, obtaining money by false pretences. Uttering a Valueless Cheque.—ln the case of a prisoner who came before the Court yesterday, committed by the Magistrate at Queenstown for uttering a valueless cheque, His Honor the Judge pointed out that no such offence was known to the law, and the prisoner was therefore discharged. Whatever the merits of the case may be, surely it is time the Government should provide the services of a competent Magistrate, unencumbered with the duties devolving upon a Warden. It is quite possible that the Magistrate referred to is, and we believe him to be, a zealous and efficient Warden ; but the duties of a Magistrate are different. If the Magistrate's Court at Queenstown has the extended jurisdiction, it strikes us that through competency as a lawyer must be the characteristic of the Magistrate. Queenstown is now to a great extent the chief inland town of Otago, and deserves to have justice legally administered. —Daily Telegrah, March 2.
