LATER NEWS FROM ENGLAND AND AMERICA.
LATER FROM AUCKLAND. The Caesar arrived at Port Chalmers on January 25th, from San Francisco. She brings dates to the 6th December. The Federal iron-clad, the famed Monitor and another ship, the Aquilla, had sunk at San Francisco. The Southerners had been routed at Chickamanuga, and were vigorously pursued. The Federal loss in three day a was 3000. Southern accounts confess a defeat. Grant was previously victorious at Chatanooga. Bragg had been routed, and abandoned wagons and 60 pieces of artillery. The Federals were pursuing him. Bragg was removing South with the remains of his army. The campaign in Virginia is supposed to be ended. In a severe action at Orange the Southerners fell back leaving their dead and wounded on the field. The Federal loss was 1000 killed end wounded. No subsequent engagement had occurred, and it was rumored that Meade would retiro to Fredericksburg. Grant was falling back, and Hooker was evacuating Ringold. Meade had already recrossed the Rapidan (?)— finding Lee's forces strongly entrenched. Provisions short, and weather severe. Meade expected to be recalled. In Texas, Corpus Christi had been captured. The Southerners surrendered without engagement. Charleston was said to be on fire, and nearly all the men in Fort Sumter killed by the fall of a wall; but the Southern accounts state that no progress had been made in the siege, and that a new battery had !>een erected in the city. The English news is to November 23. Parliament had been prorogued to January 13. French papers were treating the Polish question more from the Russian point of view. Napoleon's proposed Congress is expected to be a failure. Sweden was making preparations for war. The news from Japan was unfavorable. The Alabama was at Bahia. General Cameron has had a Maori spy executed in th« Raglan district. From Taranaki there is a rumor of an assembling of the natives, who are expected to number 1000 or 1500.
