Tunnelling at the Kawakau.— The following Uitis, having reference to the great tunnel now iu progress at the Gorge, and communicated by Mr Buchanan to the Goldfields Department, will be perused with interest by our mining readers:—" Working at the Gorge, alout five miles from Cromwill. Driving into Terrace Flat, about filty feet from the river 1 auk, about HO or 70 feet above the level of the river. The drives are from 20 to 40 feet wide by a length along the river of 300 feet. Found gold ou the edge of the rock at the bank of the river. The run seemed to be along the river. without props or timber. Cleared out the whole space. Ail gravel overhead. Slate bottom up t..e river. Lower down, strong quartz gravel, below : s clay or sand bottom. Nearly level on floor. Since we left, others bave driven nearly 300 feet further in under the Flat. Still lead, still got gold, but not so good as in front. Gold wateiwoin and heavy, little fine gold. Four in party, and in four months they obtained 800 ozs. Scotland's party still working in the vicinity, and bave a three times better claim. Dry all the time ; about a qu iter of a mile from the river's edge. Sutheiland's party have sunk a shaft 150 feet deep without timber, and struck a heavy body of water" A WITTY Kustic—A young lady was walking in the parish of Upton St. Leonard's a few d;iy» ago, when she observed a joskin scattering some black stuff broadcast over the land. *• What are ycu sowing, my good man ? " she inquired. " Sut (soot) maim," replied the ru-stic. " Well, and whatever do \ou expect to reap?" exclaimed the lady. "Why, chimbcr.ees, of course, marm," replied Johnny Kaw, wit'i a hearty grin. We cannot describe the young lady's astonishment.— Gloucester Paper.
