ROUTE FROM VICTORIA TO THE LAKE GOLDFIELDS.
The shortest route is via lnvercargill, which i* at least one day nearer Victoria than Dunedin. The steamers Gothenburg and Edina call regularly at lnvercargill, and the Aldinga and Om o at th« Bluff, which is distant from town 20 miles. VVom lnvercargill the North Road is followed, beginning at Dee-street. About four and a half miles from town the road turns to the left, and from ihence to Winton Bush the dray track should be kept, then the Survey Line to the River Oreti, and iroin thence the dray track should be kept to the foot of the Lake. If the Oreti is high the east bank can be kept all the way. There is a traek leading back from the accommodation house 011 Rogers' slation, which saves fording twice. By this route the distance is only 92 miles from lnvercargill, the road perfectly level, and there are accommodation houses all the way. A coach, also, runs three times a week, accomplishing the journey in 12 hours; Fare, £5. From Dunedin via King.ston, (foot of the Lake) the distance is 220 miles ; via the Duntstan, 150 miles. This latter road is mountainous to a degree, and there are no means oi communication.
