It is proposed to establish a fund under the charge of the Rural Deanery Board of Otago and Southland, for the purpose of supporting Missionary Clergymen, and where necessary, paid Lay Readers in the several goldfields, and of assisting in the erection of places of worship, schools, and residences for those employed in the mission. The Fund to be called " The Mission Fund" for the goldfields of Otago and Southland. Contributions are earnestly solicited in aid of the Fund, to be applied to any of the abovementioned purposes, and in any particular district as the subscriber may think fit If the district specified cease to be a goldfield, the contribution will be applied to similar purposes in some other goldfield, at the discretion of the Rural Deanery Board. All contributions made to the general Fund will be applied, at the discretion of the Rural Deanery Board, to any goldfield, or purpose connected with the objects «f the mission. The Bishop, in 1862, received from the Society for Propagating the Gospel in Foreign Parts, the promise of a grant of £2OO per annum, for one year and a half, towards the maintenance of a Missionary Clergyman, but he has hitherto been unable to meet with a clergyman willing, to undertake the duty for a stipend, limited to soshort a period, and altogether inadequate to the necessary expenses of the mission. All claim upon the grant will expire en the 31st of December, 1863. The bishop, however, is prepared to make an application to the same society for the renewal of the grant, and, if through the contributions received by the Mission Fund, he can guarantee for the services at the a more adequate and permanent stipend, he will again make the necessary iuquiries for a cletgy* man, and in all probability with better prospects of success. . , . -i * .
