The following are the Escort returns for the present week:— Arrow 2777 6z Queens'tbwri....... 4250 7027 We are requested to note that Uivine Service will be held in the Wesleyan chapel at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. 'lhe Ball held oh Wednesday last at the Camp Hotel was every respect a complete success. The numWr of ladies, their very elegant toilettes, the decorations of the. room, and sumptuous supper, could hard'y fail (o please and satisfy the most scrupulous. The toasts of the evening, " The Ladies," aud the " The Hostess," • Mrs. Willis, who, by the presence, of the one, and marked kindness of the other; had contributed so,much to the pleasure of all present, were proposed by Messrs. Campbell and Powell, and heartily responded to by all present. Altogether the Ball may be considered a great success, and serves to show the improvement that has taken placem all parts of Quceustowu society. We are requested by the Hon. Secretary of the Wakatip Hdspital to acknowledge the receipt, through Mr Warden Beetham, of the sum of £l, assessors' fees contributed by Messrs. Prosser, Lubecki, Marks, and Bond. A Tea Meeting was held at the Masonic Hall last evening, in aid of the funds of the Church of England, and was atteuded with the most unequivocal success. A large, number of persons partook of the viands WMiberafly afforded by the ladies of Queenstown,, who, forgttf'ul of difterenc of creed, came willingly forward to assist in the good work; and for whose kindness no praise can be too great, or thanks too lavish. Mr Beetham, as chairman, addressed those present in reference to the object of the meeting, and was followed by Mr hees. Mr Campbell, hon. sec. laid the financial statement before the meeting ; and the, business being concluded, everyone seemed determined on spending a pleasant evening. Miss Hoyal sang the charming ballad of f Sweet Spirit, hear my prayer," now so widely known in this district, with her usual good taste; und Messrs. Fawcett, Dale, and Carey also tendered their valuable services—a kindness thoroughly appreciated by the many visitors present. The sum of £l4 10s. was collected during the evening. The production of a sensation drama, such as the ".Will and the Way," with the few facilities at command in so remote a region as this, was a task which was sufficiently difficult to cause considerable doubts iii the minds of the public as to its advisability or practicability, and it was therefore with pleased surprise that the audience on Wednesday evening, on the occasion of Miss Kate Grant's benefit, found their forebodings groundless. Mr Carey, as Will Sideler, dressed and acted the •' villain" with the closest attention to the orthodox melodramatic model, working the trap-doors, knife and lantern, and performing all the eccentricities usual to this peculiar genus, to admiration. Mr Tom Fawcett, as Martin, and Mr Sanford Fawcett as the Khan, also deserve especial mention, while Bob l)ale, as Joe Beans, acted the rustic to the life. Miss Royal made an excellent Ellen, acting with more vigor, and appearing to be better acquainted with her part than usual. The character of Zara was scarcely suited to Miss Grant, or that of Meeran Hafaz to Miss St. Clair ; but these ladies made the most of their parts, and acquitted themselves creditably. The house was crowded to excess, aud repeated applause greeted the efforts of the company.
