To the Editor of the Lake Wakatip Mail. Sir,—l have to inform you that I came from Fox's to-day for letters to the government postoffice, and to my surprise I found the postmaster absent. On enquiry I found that Mr Peryman, who, I have beep told is buying gold for the Bank of New Zealand, was gone to town. A digger came and opened the post-office, and told me that he had no letters for me. I shall leave it to the public to judge of the government appointments, when a civilian is allowed to act in the place of a government official. Why not leave the key of the post-office in the hands of the police? If a gold buyer for the Bank of New Zealand is to be a postmaster under the Government, I should like to know who is, or who will be his substitute when absent, and the miners on the Shotover loudly calling for letters in his absence. Trusting that you will insert this in your columns, I am, Sir, yours, &c., James Rock. Maori Point, Not. 1,1869.
