THE KAWARAU.

(from our own correspondent.)

The inhabitants of the Dunstan are high in the stirrups about the dray road being made on the east side the Clutha river, to the Kawarau junction, crossing at Hill's Bridge, and in consequence are fast improving their business sites, and as the Dunstan News justly remarks—" encroaching on and spoiling the picturesque view of the main street of the city of Clyde." I am informed Dr. Shaw of this township, who has had many years practice in Victoria, and a long resident in New Zealand, and wh.) was recently complimented at a meeting of the committee of the Dunstan Hospital, for his valuable services, rendered in cases of emergency in that establishment, is about to offer himself as a candidate for the appointment of House Surgeon at the Frank ton Hospital. A few days ago, a digger was coming from the direction of the Nevis, to the Kawarau, across the ranges, but being a stranger to the place he missed the track and had the misfortune to fall over a rock, a height of twenty feet, getting his body severely bruised, and receiving a severe bruise over the eye. After recovering his senses he immediately wended his way to Dr. Corse, Kawarau junction, (Cromwell) who cleansed, sewed up, and strapped his wounds, and to his astonishment and great mortification was repaid by being laughed at, the fellow going off to place himself in the arms of Bacchus, and in a couple of hours afterwards was on his road to the Dunstan, (Clyde) where he again lost his equilibrium, but this time 011 a level, and was near being run over by the coach of Cole and Co., en route from Clyde to Cromwell. I am credibly informed that the members of the police force intend subscribing each a day's pay, for the purpose of erecting a monument over the body of their much respected and lamented comrade, Sergeant Garvey.
